A practice for women navigating life's transitions

You are not lost. You are becoming.

Helping women navigate life's transitions with greater clarity, self-trust, and self-authorship, because transformation begins before the light appears.

About

Sometimes life changes before we are ready.

A relationship ends. A career no longer fits. Children leave home. A new dream emerges. A loss changes everything. Or perhaps nothing dramatic has happened at all. You simply know that something feels different. Many women experience these moments without language, perspective, or support. Dark Before Dawn was created for those moments.

The most meaningful changes in life often begin long before they become visible, long before certainty arrives, long before the path becomes clear. You do not need complete certainty to move forward. You need enough clarity for the next step.

The Journey of Becoming

The Whisper, the Awakening, the Threshold, the Cocoon, Navigation, Dawn, Flight: a familiar path, and you don't have to walk it alone.

Illuminate, don't rescue

Dark Before Dawn doesn't steer the ship. Like a lighthouse, it helps you see, and trust your own way forward.

For every season of becoming

Understand yourself more deeply. Trust yourself more completely. Advocate for what you need. Move from uncertainty to self-authorship.

Choose Your Path

Where we do our best work together.

Most women start with a single conversation. From there, some want ongoing company, others want a structured circle, and some want a few days fully away. There's no required order — only the one that fits your season.

Emerge

Modern life leaves little room for transition. We leave one chapter on Friday and start the next on Monday. The Dawn Retreat Experience creates the space most transitions never get: to reflect, to grieve, to celebrate, to become.

You will leave with greater clarity than you arrived. Not certainty. Clarity. And clarity is enough to take the next step.

Our Approach

Pause, then Write.

Every guided question follows the same rhythm, the same one that governs an actual dawn. Nothing is rushed toward the light.

PauseWrite

Not a philosophy of fixing

It is a philosophy of becoming. We don't hand you answers. We help you hear the ones you already carry.

Language before answers

Perspective, frameworks, and community, built specifically for the in-between, not borrowed from somewhere else.

Built from lived experience

Grounded in psychology and organizational development, and in a personal education in moving through hard chapters instead of around them.

Alison is a doctoral candidate in international psychology (ABD), with a focus on organizations and systems, and has spent 25+ years across corporate communications and organizational consulting, work that taught her how systems change, and how individual people actually move through that change.

"For much of my life, I believed that clarity would arrive before change. Experience taught me otherwise."

Dark Before Dawn was born from her own journey through transition, and from a belief that many women carry far more wisdom than they realize. What they need is not someone to tell them what to do, but perspective, language, and room to trust what they already know.

Read the Founder's Letter

Dear Friend,

If you are reading this, there is a good chance that something in your life is changing. Perhaps a chapter is ending. Perhaps another is beginning. Perhaps you are standing somewhere in between. If so, I want you to know that I understand that place.

Much of my life has been spent navigating transitions. Some were chosen. Others were not. Some arrived gradually. Others arrived all at once. There were seasons when I felt confident and clear, and seasons when I felt lost or standing completely still.

Looking back, nearly every meaningful period of growth began the same way: not with certainty, but with discomfort. A question. A whisper. Something inside me knew that the life I was living no longer fit the person I was becoming. I once interpreted those moments as problems to solve. Now I understand them as invitations: to listen more closely, to trust myself more deeply, to become more fully who I was meant to be.

These ideas were shaped by my life as a woman, a mother, a daughter, a leader, and a lifelong learner, and by the wisdom of my father, whose words still guide me:

"It is always darkest before the dawn."

"The caterpillar thought there was nothing left, then it became a butterfly."

And perhaps most importantly: "The most important thing you will ever do, and the hardest thing you will ever do, is give birth to yourself."

Dark Before Dawn is my attempt to share what I learned, not because I have all the answers, but because I believe many women carry more wisdom than they realize. What they often need is not someone to tell them what to do. They need perspective. Language. Community. Space to reflect. Permission to trust what they know.

Whatever chapter you are navigating, you are not alone. Becoming is not reserved for a select few. It is the work of a lifetime, and it remains available to all of us.

Thank you for being here, and for allowing these ideas to become part of your story.

With gratitude,

Alison A. Stienessen
